WASHINGTON, D.C., April 4, 2016 - The Alzheimer's Impact Movement sent direct mail to constituents of Representative Tom Cole (R-OK) and of Representative Nita Lowey (D-NY), asking them to thank their representatives for their successful efforts to strengthen medical research. The mailers, which were distributed in their home districts, emphasize their support in the fight against Alzheimer's.
"Representatives Cole and Lowey recognize the unique financial threat posed by Alzheimer's, America's costliest disease, and the devastating effect this disease has on the more than five million Americans living with Alzheimer's and their families," said Robert Egge, Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Impact Movement. "Their leadership has accelerated critical research which holds the promise to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's by 2025."
Alzheimer's disease is the only one of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. Today, the total national cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's and other dementias is estimated at $236 billion (excluding unpaid caregiving), of which $160 billion is paid for by Medicare and Medicaid.
