An early and accurate diagnosis can improve access to care and support services, enhance quality of life and significantly reduce the financial impact of dementia. State policymakers can take action by:

  • Establishing or expanding public awareness campaigns to increase the early detection and diagnosis of dementia, promote care planning, and improve caregiver health.
  • Establishing policies to advance dementia risk reduction and promote brain health across provider and community settings.
  • Establishing policies to incentivize early detection, diagnosis, care planning, and care coordination for individuals and families living with dementia.
  • Requiring or strengthening ongoing education of clinicians on early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia as part of regular continuing medical education.
